January is called Gichi-Manidoo-Giizis in Ojibwe which translates to “Great Spirit Moon.” Sometimes you may see the “Gichi” dropped to name the month simply as “Manidoo-Giizis.” Another name, used more in the Eastern Canada border lakes, is Aabita-Bibooni-Giizis. The Ojibwe Word of the Weekend is ayaabe. Last week we posted the general word for deer in Ojibwe, waawaashkeshi. If you want to speak specifically about a buck in Ojibwe, the word to use is ayaabe. The Ojibwe Word of the Weekend is Gidagaakoons. This is an Ojibwe word for fawn. You’ll notice in this video that the ‘n’ towards the end of Gidagaakoons a parenthesis around it because that ‘n’ is sometimes hard to hear and a little more nasal.
