Public talk: The History of Stourbridge Glass

The Stourbridge area became a global glassmaking centre from the 17th century onward. This was not by chance. The industry needed massive amounts of coal to fire the intense, constant heat of its furnaces burning 24/7, and the Black Country's geology provided this essential fuel in abundance. To feed the glass industry, a sprawling network of coal mines was dug underneath the towns of the West Midlands.
