On January 10, 1862, Leland Stanford took a rowboat down the streets of Sacramento to the State Capitol building, then at I and 7th Streets, from his mansion on N and 8th Streets for his inauguration as the eighth Governor of California. Stanford was one of the Big Four behind the Central Pacific and instrumental in the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869. His former mansion in downtown is now a California State Park.
