Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 – as an “undaunted champion of peace” – for his nonviolent struggle to end racial segregation, a recognition which he accepted on behalf of the American civil rights movement for social justice. King was 39 when he died, assassinated on 4 April 1968, during a trip to support striking sanitation workers in the city of Memphis, USA.
