💉 On this day in 1954, the Salk polio vaccine trials began at Franklin Sherman Elementary School in McLean, Virginia. Throughout the trials, around 600,000 children became “Polio Pioneers” when they were injected with either the new vaccine or a placebo. They each received a metal pin and a certificate. He could only move his head, neck and mouth and almost died before doctors put him in an iron lung. It was this machine that kept him alive for 70 years...
